Camp Descriptions

Pottery Camp

Campers will experiment with a variety of building techniques including pinch pots, slabs, coils, and the wheel. Campers will also learn the basics of sculpting to create interesting elements for their pieces. All levels are welcome. Clay pieces generally take one to two weeks to be fired. All materials are provided by GSOA. For rising 3rd—12th graders.

Painting, Drawing, & More

Campers will explore the world of aesthetics and what goes into art making. Through observation and special attention to detail, they will learn about shapes, space, drawing techniques, color mixing, paint handling, and more. The subject matter may include portraits, landscapes and still life, or anything that strikes the camper’s interest! Campers will create a 16”×20” canvas painting. All materials are provided by GSOA. For rising 3rd—9th graders.

Landscape Painting: Inspired by Bob Ross

Campers will learn the technical style of painting made famous by Bob Ross through hands-on instruction. The camp offerings include a variety of landscape techniques that will build up to the creation of one-of-a-kind work of art. Campers will start from a blank canvas and end with a completed painting that can be taken home. All materials are provided by GSOA. For rising 3rd—9th graders.

Creative Comics

If you have an interest in comic books, creating character-driven stories, and like to draw, this camp is for you! Whether you love super heroes, sci-fi, manga, fantasy, or comedy, the structure within is all the same. We will touch on all the essential tools you will need to understand the comic book medium. Campers will learn all the fundamentals of the storytelling art. Campers will also learn techniques for developing a story outline, page layout, character design, drawing with perspective, inking, and tips on lettering their comics. For rising 3rd—12th graders.

Paint Pour

Campers will dive into the world of fluid art painting. Several techniques and unusual tools will be demonstrated resulting in gorgeous, marbled paintings. Campers will then experiment with each technique on paper until they feel confident applying their knowledge to a final piece on canvas using the method(s) of their choosing. Paint pours are perfect for achieving striking abstract paintings, but can also be used to easily paint natural subjects such as the ocean or a geode crystal.

Sculpture: Intro to Mixed Media

Campers will learn what mixed media art is and how to create satisfying sculptural artworks using more than one material ( or “medium” ). Materials used for mixed media art are subject to the artist’s imagination and may include fabric, paint, paper, clay, found objects, and more. Campers will be guided through multiple 3D mixed media project prompts throughout the week. They will personalize their projects through color, shape, form, and other elements of art.

All About Animals

Campers will learn about their favorite animals and how to draw them. With the help of printed reference images, campers will learn how to apply realistic proportions and shading to their drawing using dry mediums such as graphite pencils, charcoal, and chalk pastel. We will begin by drawing a collection of thumbnail sketches. Campers will then choose their favorite and enlarge it onto the final paper. The remainder of camp will be spent reviewing techniques and perfecting their drawings as they see fit.
